Short stories, often a real drabble, but sometimes just whatever.

A drabble is a short story in exactly 100 words. I first heard about them from Ms. Robin Hobb, who is without a doubt my favourite fantasy author. I get excited every time I see she has a new book out. If I had to choose between eating and reading Robin Hobb, reading would win by a mile. Luckily, I can eat while reading Robin Hobb.

So anyway, the drabble is a story in exactly 100 words. Sometimes, I forget to put in words like "the" or "of" in my endeavour to have only 100 words. Let me know if I did, I would appreciate it.

Misconnection

"What?"

"Hello?"

"Hi! Sorry I missed that last thing you said."

"I wanted to know when..."

Silence.

She clicks the red 'disconnect' button. The program asks her to rate the service.

For two long minutes she stares at her options, stuck between 'poor connection' and 'impossible to conduct a conversation.'

But she clicks 'next,' plugs the headphones back in and fires up YouTube.

Seepbel

Die seepbelle dryf in die lug, stadig, af, af, en sterf op haar wange. Sy lag elke keer. Die hospitaalbedjie ratel saam met elke uitbarsting en die pleister wat die drup aan haar gebrande arm vashou dreig om los te trek.

Wynand, met sy groot hande, lomp vir enigeiets behalwe skrynwerk, dip die stokkie in die seepbakkie en blaas vir haar nog borrels. Sy lag weer.

"Hoor hierso, ons wil graag 'n foto van al die volunteers neem en dan kan ons maar gaan." Hy kyk op na die stem en frons vir die organiseerder.

"Die bus is hier. Tyd om huis toe te gaan."

Hy knik, kyk af na die meisie in die bedjie. Haar gesiggie skitter, met mondhoeke wat wil-wil in 'n glimlag trek, haar lyfie uitgeteer en bewegingsloos op die vuil linne. Hy sit die seepbakkie op die bedkassie neer. Wynand loop uit die saal uit.

Hy kyk nie terug nie. Hy sien nie of haar oë hom volg nie: vraend, seer en teleurgesteld. Dis net seepbelle. Hulle hou nooit lank nie.

(You should read it first. He swears a lot. If you haven't read it, the rest of this post might not make sense 'cause I'm too lazy to summarise it for you.)

I have a few arguments to make:

1. Recycling does make a difference for these reasons:

(a) I'm not sure the statistics he's quoting are correct, but anyone who's lived in a city where the refuse collection guys have striked for more than a week will know: a household generates A LOT of waste, and it has to go somewhere. It can't stay in the streets - where would we drive? Even if we didn't pass out from the stench. So, where does our rubbish go? To Garbage Island.

(b) Recycling is a habit. It re-inforces a certain value. Values are powerful. Sure, today it may only be in homes, but homes generate children, and children work for companies when they grow up. If the values of recycling, re-use and waste reduction are strong enough, it'll flow into the personnel of companies. We can't expect corporations to start the change. We can't expect values from them we don't hold dear in our own homes.

2. I'm all for boycotting, but who will Black March really hurt?

3. The bill didn't even go up for voting. So yeah, a little internet action did speak loud enough.

Girls

Once again I am participating in the Comic Creators for Freedom (formerly known as the Comic Creators Alliance) against human trafficking.

In 2010 I entered Sophie.

Last year it was a portrait of Caern.

And this year it’s Cloë’s turn.

It was hard to do this year because

(a) I’ve never been in a snow fight due to the fact that, on the one day I’ve ever seen snow, my ankle was busted because the day before I was playing on a tower of ice and slipped. Who knew ice was slippery?

(b) While doing this picture it was sweltering hot, sweat dripping off my brow, charcoal slipping in my hand. It’s hard to imagine what coats and scarves look like under these circumstances.

Anyway if you want to see what this year’s wallpaper looks like you gots to donate before Friday!

To participate, we formed the Comic Creators for Freedom– a group of over 100 comic book creators who volunteered our artistic talents to raise money and awareness for this cause. You may not know it, but there are currently 27 million enslaved people worldwide- more than double the number of enslaved Africans during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. UNICEF estimates that 1.2 million children every year are sold into slavery, most of it sexual. The US Department of Justice estimates 16,000 victims of human trafficking are brought into the United States every year. Unlike slavery in the past, what is happening today is happening in secret. It won’t end until awareness is raised, and people like you and me take a stand.

So here’s what we did: each creator contributed an original drawing of one of our own female characters, and combined them into a single wallpaper image! The wallpaper features characters from all over the web, including Girls with Slingshots, The Dreamland Chronicles, Kukuburi, Earthsong Saga, Looking for Group, Love and Capes, The Dreamer, and tons more! Donate today to download this unique, once-in-a-lifetime wallpaper.
