night watcher

The wise owl: Athena’s bird, her symbol of strategy and farsighted planning, the symbol of her city.

I’ve had the good fortune, in my life, to hold an owl. Her feathers were softer than the most luxurious fabric. She was so light that I didn’t even feel her when she perched on my outstretched arm (in my defence, I was expecting a vulture from the other direction – that was part of the setup of the bird show. And she was a really tiny owl).

I’ve mentioned owls before, in their original symbolic context: Inanna’s birds, who can see in the dark, who can hunt in the Underworld. Who knows what dwells there? It bodes well to be able to peer into that darkest of Nights.
